Rusape General Hospital has addressed widespread social media claims alleging a shortage of beds and the absence of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), following the viral circulation of an image showing a patient lying on a mattress on the floor.
Dr. Steward Karembo, the hospital’s medical superintendent, clarified that the decision to place the patient on the floor was based solely on her medical condition, which required additional safety precautions.
“The patient’s condition caused her to be restless and agitated, increasing the risk of falling from an elevated platform. To ensure her safety, we placed her on a mattress on the floor. This was a safety measure, not an indication of resource shortages,” said Dr. Karembo. Unfortunately, the patient passed away earlier this week due to the deterioration of her condition.
Dr. Karembo also emphasized that the hospital is well-equipped and committed to providing quality healthcare. He welcomed donations but advised donors to follow proper government clearance procedures to ensure transparency and appropriate resource distribution.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services, Mr. Nick Mangwana, echoed Dr. Karembo’s sentiments on X (formerly Twitter), explaining the rationale behind the hospital’s decision and reassuring the public of its dedication to patient care.
“There is a picture making rounds on social media about a patient on a hospital mattress. The institution concerned explained that the patient’s condition made her restless and agitated. A decision was made to ensure her safety by placing her on a mattress to minimise the risk of falls and injury. We felt it was necessary to clarify this matter,” Mr. Mangwana wrote.
Rusape General Hospital reiterated that it is functioning effectively despite challenges faced by public healthcare facilities and remains committed to delivering the best possible care to its patients.
